Tomorrow I close out #NCTMDC23 as the keynote. I’m not alone though. I bring with me ancestors, math fam that speaks my name in rooms I’m not present, and the spirits continually murdered in classrooms. I am because of them… and many of YOU. Let’s get it.


Will you be at #NCTMDC23 or #NCSM23? I just arrived and would love to say hi. And if you’re an early riser come by the Union Station room (Marriott) tomorrow morning (Friday) at 8:00am to talk Problem Pairs, a fun idea I’ve been playing with recently!

This is very interesting research and I think there is a clear parallel to our collective obsession with long, linear paths toward grade-level mathematics learning within K-12.

When students have a long prereq sequence to get through, they tend to have a low throughput - a phenomenon called exponential attrition. Every course along the way might have good success rates - but the system can still have an awful throughput. eric.ed.gov/?id=ED565668 4/18
