Love this question! Especially b/c I think the tools that will help facilitate writing-related transfer (imagination, empathy, curiosity, etc.) align with dismantling institutions, which is why universities decreasingly provide environments that foster them.

If we are to have engaging and robust writing programs in high schools, we need to challenge the dominance of the lit-crit paper. It is too narrow a focus. Fine to write about texts, but there are other topics for analysis.

I like to imagine that after a year ends, the year just goes and joins all the other years at a bar, but this year none of the other years will hang out with 2018 because it was such a dick. Only then will 2018 start to cry, realizing what it has done, but it will be too late.

Perhaps it’s obvious but I’m in awe of Jocelyn Bell Burnell. Her PhD supervisor was given the Nobel Prize for her work. This year when she was awarded £2.3mil for her discovery she donated it to fund underrepresented groups become physics researchers.

Rhetoric & Writing colleagues: I made a website that tracks new books in the field: rhetorlist.net I've too often missed the announcement for a great new book, only to find it months (or years!) later. Rhetorlist tries to solve that problem. I hope it's useful. (1/4)
Any good readings/lesson plans for teaching about false equivalency in composition? I have v smart students suggesting that an article by experts in Science is “biased” because it backs up a position on a controversial issue. This concerns me.
