Oh, it is 100% a real thing. It allows you to basically hide any nodes from the channel box which as you probably noticed gets very busy on complex rigs. I tweeted about it a few years ago and @Muream did a video.
Small #rigtip I just found out about. You can hide nodes from the history of other nodes by setting their "isHistoricallyInteresting" attribute to 0. Having a long history can slow down selection a lot simply because maya wants to display everything in the channelbox

Riggers. I love you so much. Please put more than just wiggle control tests for rig reels. Or not at all. I need context into not just what you rigged but WHY. Why did you rig that foot roll? Show it to me in action with animation or in a game 💕 #techart #rigging
Haha I logged on to tweet this but Izzy said it perfectly
Attended a wedding earlier this month. Today, the photography team sent a link, with a face recognition system, to extract just your pictures from the pool of thousands of them within milliseconds. Tech and its use-cases. 🤯
I've just uploaded some videos covering vector & matrix math in #Maya3D, and some videos about how data flows through the DG graph and more. Been sitting on these for a while, figured I might as well share them saihtam.com/posts/maya-dat… saihtam.com/posts/maya-mat… #rigTip #techArt
Hey all! I'm continuing my quest of sharing rigging knowledge that is hard to find elsewhere, so here is a guide for easily adjusting the bind pose. And as a bonus, how to apply modifiers to meshes with shape keys. 👉patreon.com/posts/59854849👈 #b3d #rigging #rigtip #gamedev
The more the TD/Rigging community sees and understands these kind of workflows the more free and the faster you can make your rigs. Make sure you aren't building rigs that animators are spending all their time working around instead of working with.
Hi #animation twitter. This is part 8 (of 12) demonstrating my general workflow...as best I can replicate it outside of work. #animtip vimeo.com/649967255

A small deformation #rigtip I learnt while at #Disney (thanks, Frank!): interpolation for RBF-driven corrective shapes works better if using DQ skinning instead of the default Linear one. That alone might remove the need for progressive shapes, which could muddle your results.
