The Bar Council is the highest body of the BASL. Delegates of the Bar Council are nominated from all branch associations. At today's meeting the Bar Council unanimously approved all the Statements and Letters issued by the Executive Committee during the month of July 2022.
The BASL condemns the attack by the forces on protestors. It is a black day for the country. The attacks happen on the first day in office of the new President. Shame!!
BASL statement on the declaration of Emergency by the acting President
In electing the need of the hour is to take decisions based on the best interests of the country and not the personal or political interests of any individual or political party.
The BASL condemns all acts of damage to property including the burning of the private residence of the PM Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe. This sort of conduct will affect Sri Lanka's economy and people. Do not resort to acts of violence and do not let others commit these dastardly acts

There is nothing called 'police curfew' under the Police Ordinance. The declaration of curfew is illegal and a blatant violation of fundamental rights.
The BASL today sent a letter to the President warning of the serious consequences that could arise as a result of clashes between civilians & the armed forces/police @ petrol stations whilst acknowledging that the police & armed forces are acting under very trying circumstances.
It is prudent for the authorities including the Army Commander and the IGP to remember these words from the Jana Ghosha Case: "Stifling the peaceful expression of legitimate dissent today can only result, inexorably, in the catastrophic explosion of violence some other day."
Yesterday and today the Police and Army had distrupted a peaceful protest at the Galle Fort. The BASL this morning wrote to the Army Commander and the IGP on this matter. We reminded the Army Commander and the IGP of the wisdom of the judgement of the SC in the Janagosha Case.

The BASL is alarmed at the failure of the Government to provide timely, accurate and reliable information to the people of the situation in respect of the fuel supply which affects every aspect of their daily lives already complicated by the economic crisis.
It is of utmost importance that those enforcing the law act with restraint and caution in dealing with the public. It is essential that police officers, in performing their duties act with understanding and empathy and acknowledge the immense suffering of the public.
Letter by BASL to the AG and IGP on the need to adhere to the procedure established by law in carrying out arrests; to avoid indiscriminate arrests and for independent and impartial investigations free from bias.

The BASL also calls upon the people of the country to remain calm and to act in a peaceful manner so that their fundamental rights which form part of their intangible heritage remain protected.
The BASL calls upon His Excellency the President to forthwith explain to the people the reasons as to why he has declared the State of Emergency. We call upon His Excellency to revoke the proclamation declaring a state of emergency.
An independent investigation must be done and the Government must ensure that the police and armed forces act with utmost restraint in the light of the genuine grievances of protesters. Our members will continue to do their utmost to safeguard the rights of the people.
The BASL views with grave convern any attempt to disrupt in whatever manner what is a peaceful protest by the people of this country. Any such attempt will have grave repercussions for the country, its democracy, its economy and the rule of law.
The BASL calls upon the President and the Members of Parliament, both in Government and the Opposition, to act as Statesmen in the country's hour of need. රටට අවශ්යම මොහොතේදී රාජ්ය තාන්ත්රිකයන් ලෙස ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ජනාධිපතිවරයා සහ මන්ත්රීවරු කටයුතු කළ යුතුය
