This October I’m ‘playing’ with words. Follow me in the lead-up to National Poetry Day (Thursday October the 2nd), and after, as we celebrate the poetic pull of spoken words and how it plays in our minds and hearts as I visit schools and tour the stage! linktr.ee/mikegarry

The Byker viaduct was the first bridge structure in Britain to be built using cantilevered concrete sections with joints glued with epoxy resin. It opened on 11 November 1982 when Metro services commenced between St James and Tynemouth. #Railway200

As for many poets uneasy in their class consciousness, Tony Harrison’s brilliant controversial long poem V. (1985) blew me away when I first read it. But his short lyrics were sharp, wise and deeply moving too, cut from lived life. Saddened to hear the great man has passed. RIP.

A couple of weeks ago, our reporter Ivana got in touch with an idea about visualising the timing of air raid sirens in Kyiv, and how Russian tactics have seemingly changed... I went through a couple of other ideas before settling on visualising the whole year so far in this way.

What a life. Ran 100m in 10.2 seconds when world record was about 10.06.

Some sad news this morning: Ming Campbell, the former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, has died at the age of 84 Ed Davey: "Ming was a fighter and a campaigner all of his life – whether that was on the sports track, in the court room, the House of Commons or the House of Lords."

These pieces very much focus on the personal experience. This misses out the price paid and love given by others. Especially, in my case and life ⁦@HDBrighton⁩ who knows what it means to have a partner with PD. thetimes.com/article/3953a3…

I randomly came across this book in college and was totally mesmerized by it. First time I had seen a serious attempt to apply math to biology in an explanatory way, not just descriptively. Pretty ahead of its time for 1917. The illustrations alone are worth browsing through.

All is revealed! The confessional was a prop brought in for the filming of the 2008 film 'Stone of Destiny' starring Robert Carlyle and Charlie Cox, in which the Abbey was dressed as a Catholic church in the 1950s. They were a bit tardy in taking it away, so the Abbey started…

Is Paisley Abbey the only Church of Scotland parish church with a confessional, I wonder. Can you guess why it's there?

9 percent

Americans die in car accidents *that often*.

About 10% of America's life expectancy shortfall is due to motor vehicle accidents—fixed by Waymo and Tesla. About 18% is overdoses—that's fading now. And the lion's share of the rest is obesity-related. America will soon be buying its way out of its poor life expectancy issue.
