Your decision to use Free/Open Source software doesn’t give you any moral superiority over others who make different choices. Conversely, you have no right to feel attacked when circumstances require you to use closed software. The real world is not for idealolgical hardliners

Hi! In case you missed, my #FOSDEM talk about creating a #rootless #container manager from scratch is available! We'll talk about the basic principles to build your own container manager, using #lilipod as an example: fosdem.org/2025/schedule/… #opensource #linux #distrobox

The whole “Rust in the Linux kernel” drama should be a lesson to all in Open Source The technology doesn’t matter Working with other people does Doesn’t matter if Rust is a gift from God, God doesn’t control what gets in the Kernel, maintainers do Technical arguments are moot

And there are chefs who don’t use Hamburger Helper

it's 2025. blows my mind there are devs out there rawdogging code manually without *any* llm support. no cursor, no composer, no chat, no copilot, not even chatgpt

I’m not a fan of VLC. It’s got: - huge attack surface (anyone remember the arbitrary code execution from a malformed subtitle?) - bad tone mapping - bad subtitle rendering - high resource usage It's 2025. Use a MPV derivative, or madVR if you want to go wild.

Just to add some additional clarity to the whole WordPress situation: Matt has publicly stated that WP Engine either had to give 8% of their revenue (which would be tens of millions of dollars per year) to his for profit corporation that’s raised nearly $1 billion dollars in…

So what’s the acceptable way of referring to that CMS which is on a rampage burning its own ecosystem? Voldapress? Wordmort? #WPEngine #wp

Richard Brown - @[email protected] reposted

I've been using #WordPress for a really long time. Since about 2004 I think. Never have I seriously thought about moving to a different CMS...until today and this BS with blocking WP Engine sites. Matt is an existential threat to WordPress and the community.

What’s everyone’s recommendations for alternatives to Wordpress considering @photomatt seems determined to burn that entire ecosystem down?

Please don't buy into the "you never need to reboot Linux" meme, if you actually care about security, apply regular updates and reboot your system. Especially for a publicly facing server, every single system accessible with a public IP is constantly being attacked

I recently raised concerns about possible data protection violations by an org that aspires to be a UK registered charity supporting FOSS Projects The response was that I should get involved and help them fix it Wouldnt that make me potentially liable for any future violations?

Richard Brown - @[email protected] reposted

Yeah, this is where people go wrong in OSS. They assume people are acting altruistically and should give freely of their time and resources. When in fact most people are more selfishly doing what interests them for their purpose and then sharing it, often to further their purpose…

And what that is basically assuming you can fork and beat the community. Assuming you will build a new community. Assuming you have the resources to reinvent the wheel. @rawkode
