McConnell: Some want the Facebook Oversight Board to review content moderation decisions made by other companies. I hope we don't. We'd benefit from comparing our decisions with those made by, say, the TikTok oversight Board #TPIAspen2021
Oh! All good then. .... except for wth does "content associated" mean? Was this human error? Automated tripwire? What are Facebook's rules around blocking hashtags anyway, & how often do they do it? How will they make sure this doesn't happen again? Except for that. All good!
Facebook w/ a new statement: “We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to, and have since restored it.” They said content associated to the hashtag led to the mistaken blocking.
"The company is watching how international organizations such as the United Nations respond" In so many areas, companies are waiting for other institutions to lead. And maybe they should stop. But that's also a damning indictment of the institutions & not a great long-term plan
I have not been this excited about a book since the last Ferrante. #LongLiveProportionality newrepublic.com/article/161561…
Sounds promising. And it makes sense. The FOB will be of marginal relevance unless it leverages its narrow jurisdiction over content-moderation to compel Facebook to address more important questions relating to platform design.
Oversight Board member Alan Rusbridger tells UK parliamentary committee that he expects the board to interrogate algorithmic amplification on the platform ("many sessions with coders") ... does Facebook know about this? parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/0e…
But we don't have to get played about the nature of the attempt, and what's going on. It's especially important because if we get played like this, we won't be able to talk about what actually needs to happen—the part that's not on Facebook, but on us. The part we failed.

Ahead of the @OversightBoard 's first decisions, I wrote an op-ed urging us to look at content moderation solutions beyond US and EU. And making sure all voices are included in this much needed conversation. My op-ed in @NationAfrica nation.africa/kenya/blogs-op…
