brandur.org/soft-deletion I agree, soft deletion is often not worth it. There are some non-trivial edge cases to consider like cascading deletion and making sure associations/joins behave correctly. It adds another category of bugs to your application.

Consider this thought experiment: kill someone by crushing them under the weight of a billion toothpicks, each thrown by a different person. Each person likely does not consider themselves the murderer. Now apply this to spreading misinformation that eventually leads to violence.
