Large private vehicles offer minimal safety benefits for their occupants while causing a tenfold increase in fatalities for occupants of other vehicles, and for pedestrians and cyclists. In less than 6 years, large vehicles & excessive speeds have undone four decades of progress.
We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.
Remember, when it comes to the actual likelihood that a vehicle crash will occur at all, AND whether the consequences of a crash are serious, or even deadly, or not, speed is ALWAYS a factor. Including when the legal speed limits are currently too high. #SpeedKills #VisionZero
It's time for leadership, not more delay on AvenueRd safety imprvments (Bloor-StClair). Why separate cyclist(May 28)+pedestrian(no date) debates on the finished plan, unless goal is to divide supporters, empower opponents? Must we wait for another death? @DianneSaxe @JoshMatlow
#StreetDesign tip: To use a bikeway, people need space to remain clear of other people and objects. And different devices—like cargo bikes—require different amounts of space. When possible, bikeways should be wide enough for all users to operate and be passed comfortably.
Cycling along a main road near Utrecht. The light turns red but it sensor detects I'm approaching on a bike so turns back to green and makes the cars wait longer
Imagine fighting so hard to make streets less safe for people. 🙄 We need the bike lanes, they made Yonge street a viable cycling route. @FFSafeStreets @VisionZeroTO @JoshMatlow @MikeColleTo @RZaichkowski
Seems rather disingenuous to be concerned about the environment when this note is printed on high gloss paper. Anyone else receive this? @cyclekay @CycleToronto @anabailaoTO @gordperks @m_layton @joe_cressy @kristynwong @PaulaFletcherTO @BradMBradford
That trope about suburban housing as "cheap" or "affordable" is just lazy at this point.

I decided to completely re-draw and augment that great @NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls diagram. Those guys in Copenhagen did a version awhile back but I wanted one with plainer language, consistent with the way we talk about street safety.
A new study estimates that a citywide plan in Barcelona to limit cars and capture nearly 70 percent of street space for bikes and pedestrians could save 667 lives per year. @mslaurabliss reports on the health benefits of creating "superblocks" in cities: trib.al/Nzko2ik

Cambridge last night passed one of the nation's most progressive bike infrastructure ordinances. It will require the construction of a protected bike lane every time a street undergoes major repair. usa.streetsblog.org/2019/04/09/cam…
“A couple of decades ago, it was perfectly normal to smoke cigarettes inside. Today, very few would do that. I think it’s the same with cars in the city center: One day we will look back and ask ourselves why we ever thought that was a good idea.” fastcompany.com/90294948/what-…
Cars just aren't very efficient in crowded urban areas. Because they take up a lot of space and usually just carry one or two people. That's why clearing cars off King Street in Toronto INCREASED the number of people moving through the corridor daily. usa.streetsblog.org/2019/04/05/wha…
Once king of sustainable transpo, Portland could become jester with a $500M interstate expansion. Not sure what’s more galling—the state thinking it can widen a road w/o increasing traffic, or thinking it can convince Portlanders it’s good for the planet opb.org/news/article/p…
What city went from 14% of all trips by bike in 2001, to 22% by 2012, then leaped to 30% in 3 years by 2015, & 35% by 2018? Thanks to #Ghent, Belgium’s Deputy Mayor @filipwatteeuw for sharing the secrets of their urban biking transformation (with jumps in walking & transit too).
