Verity is presenting at the #autismcjs conference today on autistic women within the CJS

Now we have @VerityChester discussing ways to prevent people with learning disabilities from offending behaviours #AutismCJS

Murphy: It is important to remember that everyone is unique and that their needs are individual #AutismCJS

Today’s @AutismPractice conference is a real eye opener. Fascinating session by @VerityChester on autistic women in the criminal justice system: “a minority within a minority” - fully agree that there is a specific need for training on autism in women in this setting. #autismcjs

After all these interesting talks, Colin has reminded us that there are 5 more sessions available on demand for 4 weeks for anyone wanting to hear more from our speakers #AutismCJS

Murphy: we asked autistic patients in high secure psychiatric care about their experiences to better understand positive and negative experiences #AutismCJS

Murphy explains that autistic people have specific needs that are recognised and considered by staff of patients. He highlights the importance of understanding autism and making progress to be more autism friendly #AutismCJS

Wicks: "it isn't about me, it is always about our clients". He finishes by explaining the importance of building rapport, trust and listening to autistic people and other panel members #AutismCJS

@sarrettspeaks is starting her talk by giving an insight into the structure of the American criminal justice system #AutismCJS

Murphy: it is important thst staff who attend autism training actively utilise it. It is important that we listen to autistic people and their families to identify what works and what to adapt #AutismCJS

Our first speaker of session 4, David Murphy, has started his talk by discussing neurodiversity and the need for the criminal justice system to be more neurodivergent-informed in its care approaches #AutismCJS

Murphy suggests that early intervention and support for people who are potentially vulnerable is important and can help to reduce the risk of autistic people entering into the criminal justice system #AutismCJS

Murphy is now sharing some of the recommendations made by the patients, such as quiet areas, increasing staff autism awareness, consistency in activities and individual informed therapy #AutismCJS

Murphy explains that there are gaps in our understanding of autistic women in forensic settings and the role of trauma in autistic and non-autistic patients. He suggests there is a need to better understand therapeutic interventions and their outcomes #AutismCJS

She's looking forward to hearing how we can work with our partners within the CJS to provide better outcomes for autistic people #AutismCJS autism.org.uk/what-we-do/pro…

@sarrettspeaks shared data on the demographics in prisons and highlighted the necessity for an intersectional approach to understanding the disparities and experiences within the American prison system #AutismCJS

@sarrettspeaks discusses her research which included interviewing 27 adults with learning disabilities and/or autism diagnoses to better understand experiences in the American criminal justice system #AutismCJS

One big hmmm #AutismCJS has been discussed for years. I will say this now as people keep sending me messages. Autism is a major issue, yet when it comes to the black community there is lack of understanding, lack of respect and lack of cultural biased views. @JesseMcquilkin

There are many cases where I supported families with their autistic children and young adults that wanted to keep silent. Thank you to @HaqueAbs @KenGreaves2 Clare Hughes from @Autism @MW_kickoffat3 @NABSS3 and the representative from New Scotland Yard #autismCJS #10YearsOn
