Thank you to Susamma Seeley for delivering part 1 of a 2 part training for MEMA on equity in emergency management to ensure equity and accessibility of our emergency management policies and programs. Today's training focused on how our own identities and biases impact our work.
This should be applied outside of academia to workplaces (and workforce programs) everywhere. The “pipeline” gets all the attention, and we don’t stop to talk the culture and climate of your workplace. #beyondDEI
The role of faculty should be to take down the racist structural barriers to the acknowledgment of Black creativity, intelligence, and excellence. It is not setting an example, but creating a climate that allows Black students to flourish. 3/N
I would add, start hiring BIPOC-owned and -operated search firms for DEI and other positions. No more White gatekeepers. #beyondDEI #gatekeepers
