Your eyes don’t lie! No, anecdote isn’t data, but very often the data is wrong - and later corrected.
Yep. It’s what happens when there’s nothing even resembling a social contract with barely anyone of working age.
Masked Neutrals and Labelled Intellectuals, Can’t Even Counter This Data #DataSaysThat #DataSpeaks
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝘼𝙂 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 During the five year period, 2019-24, the then opposition parties TDP and JSP continuously lied that the then Government’s policies were resulting in unchecked growth in liabilities and…
Everyone hated when we put up that chart saying moderates do better, but that’s what the data said. Or when we gave Trump 50/50 odds and half of liberal Twitter hated us. Or when we said the Democrats are facing a serious base problem and some people don’t like it. Data is data.
It's curious that so many (both scholars and not) unhesitatingly make claims like "the data say" or "data don't lie" or "the data speak for themselves." These aren't real arguments; they're statements of belief/faith. And they're untrue. Data without interpretation mean nothing.
Has been and will continue to be "data-driven" because most of the data we're gathering is flawed and most of the ways we see it analyzed is nonsense.
Headline: “X causes Y.” Reader: “Really?” Statistician: “Someone did a small study one time, never reproduced, that showed a small positive correlation between W, a proxy for X, and Z, a proxy for Y.” Reader: “What does that mean?” Statistician: “Probably nothing.”
"Well, the data says..." Nothing. The data says nothing. Our biases and assumptions give data its voice. At the end of the day, decisions are still made by people.
I think the message in Data Science needs to be: Don't believe everything you read. I'd like to thank Rafael Nicolas Fermin Cota for pointing me to this modified graphic from a recent Harvard Business Review article. Here's my take. 🧵 #datascience #rstats
Data > Feelings Numbers do not lie and they give you the insight you need for your next decisions. While it’s tempting to go with your gut, it’s still more reasonable to trust your data. You’ll be surprised how most of the time they even tell you the same thing!
When people say to me, "You can prove anything with statistics", I say, "Not to a statistician you can't." @TimHarford's new book "The data detective" provides ten powerful rules for working out what the data really says: amzn.to/3fFdJdc. Highly recommended.
If you keep saying "the data says otherwise" ÿou will get away with it 9 out of 10 times when in fact the data does not say otherwise.
I ask myself time after time, when MP's / Bojo / SAGE look at data like this and still think we should be in lockdown what are they actually thinking.
