Too convoluted. I'm for using GLSL, because of its popularity, but it's not ideal for compute shaders.
fine, SystemVerilog it's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I mean the shader code is translated from GLSL through multiple layers and ends up running on the (NVIDIA?) GPU C++ is acting as glue code to get the shader onto the GPU

Not really. This is glsl code in action. Js is just wrapping the real work and making it convenient to port, but is not necessary. Real work is done by the GPU and the genius shader programmer xor.

I would argue that code also is very visual. Two examples come to mind - shaders and tweening/transitions. Shaders are GLSL (or visual graph for some engines) code directing how objects are colored by the GPU, like cartoon shading, and transitions are likewise often code too.
