Lots of tricky bits certainly. Shouldn't this ultimately ALL be up to the consumer, with appropriate transparency and control (and of course in accordance with law)? Or is consumer choice and #PredictablePrivacy not common ground?

We believe in / work towards #PredictablePrivacy for consumers, via open industry standards and frameworks for compliance/accountability. The alternative is proprietary and fragmented consumer privacy run by for-profit, shareholder-driven companies.

#PredictablePrivacy is consumers' privacy choices adhered to predictably+reliably w/ accountability. Across channels, 1Ps, devices, etc. We believe that's important. Otherwise becomes custody battle over consumer -- every 1P device, O/S, browser, app, site, signal provider, etc.

Privacy should be optional for the user, not something the platform decides for them. Even a regional hint can endanger activists, journalists and dissidents. If you truly understood the risks activists face, this feature wouldn’t ship like this. A toggle won’t protect everyone.

I will reiterate a refrain i’ve posted multiple times: Dance like no one’s watching; email like it could become part of discovery; chat with chatgpt like you’re on an NSA watchlist. Privacy starts with the individual being careful and not just data dumping into a tech platform.

We built a world where your fridge watches you, your phone records you, your car tracks you. And somehow you’re the suspicious one for using privacy tools?

As I type this, my laptop is tracking everything I do. Every click, search, download - all recorded. We don't think about it because we just want to work. Reality check: Our personal info is everywhere. Names, numbers, bank details. Sometimes WE give it away without knowing.…

Privacy is about choosing who gets our personal information. But we’ve been tricked into thinking it’s about “hiding” because default settings force us into constant data collection. It’s time to fight back and reclaim our right to consent from the start.

Privacy: because we may be innocent today, but authorities can decide we're guilty tomorrow. And they'll use our data to prove it.

"Privacy and convenience is a tradeoff I'm not willing to make" You'd be surprised to learn that in 2024 the privacy tools are awesome, and often require no tradeoff.

Privacy is about protecting yourself. Countless apps on your phone collect and monetize your daily habits and know your routine. Your real-time location data is purchasable for almost nothing. You may not have anything to hide, but you have everything to protect. #PrivacyMatters

Some people believe that if they just elect the right people, their privacy will be saved. The government is one of the most egregious offenders when it comes to surveillance overreach. Put your trust in mathematics/encryption and save yourself.

Modern society has a super complicated relationship with privacy: People assume they have it, then they pretend like they don't really care if they have it, and then when they actually need it, it's too late.

I want you to always operate under the assumption that the data you give to apps or sites will someday be given to the people you don't want to have that data. Opt for end to end encryption, and opt to not provide valid data to places that don't do end to end encryption.

New from 404 Media: in a massive shift, Telegram says it now *will* provide user data to authorities in response to legal orders. Includes IP addresses and phone numbers. Yesterday privacy policy said just terror suspects. Now it is crimes more broadly 404media.co/telegram-chang…

People tell me that privacy isn't achievable for the average person because it's too confusing. Privacy IS hard. But it's also possible, & we can all fight for it. The more we push back against surveillance, the more privacy options we'll have. It's important to not give up. 💪

As a prediction, I agree 100%. As a preference, not so great. There is no other future. Safety will push us this way, like it or not. Example: Once one person can have the technology to destroy a city, and does it a few times, privacy will go to zero to prevent it.

Klaus Schwab: “In the new world, you have to accept total transparency. It will become part of your personality” “Everything will be transparent. If you have nothing to hide you have no reason to be afraid.” 🔊

The digitization of everything changed the defaults. It's too easy to casually invade someone's privacy. The encryption of everything will change the default back. Make surveillance hard again.

Some hope that if one is careful, avoids certain platforms or apps, and opts out of this or that, that one can escape the clutches of these engines of surveillance. That is simply not true. In a post-Roe America, we may well get the costly wake-up call. nytimes.com/2022/05/19/opi…

A common thing we hear in privacy work is the dichotomy. Privacy vs. security Privacy vs. safety Privacy vs. innovation Privacy vs. free speech Privacy vs. accessibility It's exhausting to hear for a lot of reasons, but primarily because it's wrong (and lazy).
