Excited to hear from @UKRI_CEO Dame Leyser at #caselecture20 that they are increasingly thinking about all those who are behind the visible research outputs. Here is how we thought about this last year @BabrahamInst with @equal4success
In her talk, @UKRI_CEO made clear she recognises the huge diversity of people involved in science #TeamScience, the value that R&I brings to the UK, and the need to improve how "value" is measured (more qual metrics?) as well as connectivity between players #caselecture20 (2/2)
“Science alone is not enough. The health of the nation is not just a medical issue. Science provides tools to navigate it (pandemic).”Dame Leyser says this is a key lesson. #caselecture20
🎙️Great to hear @UKRI_CEO Ottoline Leyser give this year's #caselecture20 As summarised by @GraemeTR, while she leads the largest + most influential research funder in 🇬🇧, she clearly "sees it as so much more than a public dispenser of money".@sciencecampaign @drsarahmain (1/2)
Reflections on science and the pandemic from @UKRI_CEO - health is not just a medical issue: engineering and social science are also crucial elements and all are needed, working together in a connected system to tackle major challenges such as COVID-19. #CaseLecture20
So lovely to hear @UKRI_CEO stress the importance of ALL of the people (not just the PI’s) who contribute to #research as we work towards an outstanding research & innovation system in the #UK #caselecture20
It’s great to hear Dame Leyser’s #caselecture20. We were delighted to recently invite Dame Leyser to speak with the Vice-Chancellors of our eight partner institutions. Read more: bit.ly/3l2BLj9
.@UKRI_CEO kicks off the CaSE Annual Lecture 2020 with key challenges... 1️⃣Narrow public perception of science. 2️⃣Segregation of science and society. ...and the need for more diversity, connections to societal needs, and a new “compact bonding science and society”. #CaseLecture20
Pandemic has shown how science (and a well funded and connected innovation system) can help us navigate uncertainty and make evidence-based decisions. But also science alone cannot eliminate uncertainty. - Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser @UKRI_CEO #CaSElecture20 @sciencecampaign
Really interesting to hear from Ottoline Leyser – taking a whole system view of the R&I ecosystem with UKRI as its steward and focusing on the people, connectivity and flow through the system. Plus beautiful graphics! #caselecture20
The UK R&D system needs to give everyone the opportunity to take part and benefit @UKRI_CEO #caselecture20
How did we get to the point where scientists and engineers are seen as ‘other’? Where science and society have become segregated? - Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser @UKRI_CEO #CaSElecture20
This segregation is problematic because it limits the diversity of people who want to be scientists, limiting creativity. Also makes it harder to connect research to societal needs - Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser @UKRI_CEO #CaSElecture20
Great @sciencecampaign lecture from @UKRI_CEO's Ottoline Leyser today on embedding and integrating R&I in society more effectively - refreshing and inspiring! Co-creation of the future iceberg of connectivity! #caselecture20
Such a privilege to host @UKRI_CEO Ottoline Leyser at #caselecture20 yesterday. Thank you all for coming and for your great questions! @sciencecampaign
Big thanks from our Chair @GraemeTR to our guest lecturer @UKRI_CEO and the entire audience of over 400 with some great questions! #caselecture20
Research and innovation happens in so many sectors: public, private, academia, SMEs etc... and it’s important for that system to be flexible and allow for people to move within it -Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser @UKRI_CEO #CaSElecture20 @sciencecampaign
Looking forward to Ottoline Leyser #caselecture20 at the @sciencecampaign
Love @UKRI_CEO description of the public's (inaccurate) perception of scientists and engineers as a special class of boffin working alone #caselecture20
So good to hear @UKRI_CEO recognising the importance of software engineers to the scientific endeavour. So many developers at @emblebi doing incredible work #caselecture20
Highly recommend this presentation by @OttolineLeyser @UKRI_CEO for anyone interested in improving #ResearchCulture #researcherdevelopment #caselecture20
You can now watch the CaSE Annual Lecture 2020 with @UKRI_CEO online: youtube.com/watch?v=dv386S… A fascinating discussion on the future relationship between science and society, and the role @UKRI_News can play #caselecture20
Well worth watching @UKRI_CEO outline her vision for UK R&D at #caselecture20 if you missed it last week. Spoiler: it includes a v thought-provoking analogy of the R&I process as an iceberg, with multiple connectors deep beneath the surface, dispelling the myth of linearity

Excellent #caselecture20 by @UKRI_CEO @OttolineLeyser with lucid discussion of the importance of science and research. Might have been nice to hear a nod to the value of research in arts and social sciences, but I suppose it’s fair enough as it was a @sciencecampaign event.
Great #caselecture20 from @UKRI_CEO - a vision that aims to put people & inclusive research front and centre
Final set of Qs to @UKRI_CEO focused on the relationship between government and @UKRI_News, UK ARPA (the elephant in the room?), the balance of funding and the extraordinary response of the science and research community to COVID-19. #CaseLecture20
Big thanks from our Chair @GraemeTR to our guest lecturer @UKRI_CEO and the entire audience of over 400 with some great questions! #caselecture20
Wish for 5 years time - a random stranger would give two thumbs up to public funding of science and research, a much broader engagement between the public and UK science @UKRI_CEO #caselecture20
@UKRI_CEO @OttolineLeyser: “It is obviously important that [research] shows value for money for the public investment, but it would be nice to operate in a more fluid way” – Her response to great question from @drsarahmain about Govt control of research funding. #caselecture20
Without proper funding across UK R&D, cross-cutting research programmes are 'straitjacketed' @UKRI_CEO #caselecture20 #spendingreview2020

The so-called 'valley of death' in R&D commercialisation is often a scale-up problem - we need to support with skills and people, plus giving better access to international markets @UKRI_CEO #caselecture20
