“One reason so many students in the United States have fixed mindsets is the praise they are given... they will feel good at first, but when they fail later they think that means they are not so smart after all”. (Pg.7) 💡 #KernMath #TeachKern @KernCMC @joboaler

This semester I was introduced to number talks, an activity that is supposed to increase Ss ability to recognize patterns in math, by working & sharing w/others. This is a great way to promote math equity & recognizing the different ways to reach an answer. #KernMath #TeachKern
To promote @joboaler 5C's we need to pull away from the text book and bring on real life challenges that not only relate to our students, but encourages them to make connections with the content and their peers. Developing a collaborative learning environment #KernMath #TeachKern
It’s highly important to use manipulatives and multiple representations to solve or explain a problem. This will address all student learning, because every student learns differently. #KernMath
What sets them apart is having a growth mindset. People need to believe they can do it, no matter the obstacles. Those that don’t give up are the ones that are most successful. #KernMath
"The very best opportunities to learn come about when students B-E-L-I-E-V-E in themselves." - Boaler #Teachkern #Kernmath @KernCMC
"Developing the perspective and strategies to change students' mindsets involves careful thinking about our OWN learning and relationship with mathematics" -Boaler pg.8 #Kernmath @KernCMC #Teachkern
@KernCMC successful math users can see connections and patterns were less successful math users see confusion & unwaivering failure. It's not that they are any more smart, but they have a growth mindset that helps them see a struggle as a method of learning #KernMath #TeachKern
A8: To "Hold the Mayo!" means to recognize that the needs of our students are our priority & that we will meet those as teams through continuous collaboration, interdependence, humility (wisdom from the group is larger than individual wisdom) and growth! #HeartBookChat #KernMath

A3: My personal improvement goal from Dr. Kanold’s list is seeking to understand the meaning and intent of the words of others. Too often I find myself prematurely and inaccurately anticipating the direction/meaning of others comments. #HeartBookChat #KernMath

@mrbartonmaths' book "How I wish I'd taught maths" is, in my view, the most important book written on math teaching in the last 20 years, and it's now available in the US: bit.ly/2FFHVng. If you teach math at any level, you need this book.
1. Open up the task so that there are multiple methods, pathways, and representations. With this method we turn away from a right/wrong approach & welcome new perspectives making learning maths a fun adventure! #KernMath #TeachKern
The district I work for just purchased Reflex Math! The program assesses Ss to see their individual level, it sends recommendations for the T, but the T can have Ss working on specific maths, and advancing them as they improve. The kids love the challenges! #TeachKern #KernMath

@KernCMC math facts many times become memorized instead of understood. Creating card games or domino games can enhance students understanding of math facts, # sense and, mathematical concepts that are not developed during memorization. #KernMath #TeachKern
