One more thing, these is also able to happen without static members, it also can be happen from instance that marked as don't destroy on load. So remember that living instance or global reference can make LMS. #unitytips


You can easily avoid this using OnDestroy event. In static member... - Field : Assign null - Array : Assign null to corresponding indexes - Collection(List, Dict, etc) : Remove instance - event : Unregister instance methods Thanks for readding, hope this helps! #unitytips

5. Open captured snapshot and click 'All Of Memory' tab at the top (It'll takes serveral minutes) 6. In sesrch field at top, type 'Leaked Managed Shell' 7. You can find all of 'destroyed but not GC collected' instances 8. Inspect these and find root causes 🧵 #unitytips


1. Build player with 'development' mode. 2. Open 'empty' project and open Window/Analysis/Memory Profiler (It has heavy memory usage!) 3. Open build and go to in game and then return to title 4. Connect it with Memory Profiler and capture it 🧵 #unitytips


When it's collected, rest of refs, including asset's reference count also decreased so Unity also able to detect it safe to unload as like GC. That's why we should aware about this. It may sounds like impossible to track these, but there's way to find them. 🧵 #unitytips


If these are referencing assets in anyways, these cannot be unloaded because of it has reference count from it. So if we dereference it from static members by assigning null, it's reference count will be zero so GC can determine that now safe to collect these. 🧵 #unitytips


You can prevent this by explictly assigning null to these static members when it doesn't needed. Why this happen? Most of native types in Unity are provided with managed wrapper types for C#. So it still can be alive even destroyed because of referencing. 🧵 #unitytips


And assume the types Player and Enemy also derived from component(MonoBehaviour is native type), and then you put them into in game scene. If in game scene is unloaded, or instances are destroyed, related assets will keep alive on memory. 🧵 #unitytips
