It's campy in a hetero/masculine way, and so it works. But on top of that, the screenplay is a perfectly constructed narrative with strong characters (marvelously played by an ace cast), consideration of deep issues, and a real emotional payoff, helmed with obvious care.

if you want campy/retro > star trek: the original series (my fav!!) if you want a similar format where they have adventures on different planets (but more recent so modern pacing, visuals etc) > star trek: strange new worlds middle ground > star trek: the next generation
