I only ever saw Bela Tarr in person once, when he came to TIFF to introduce Hu Bo's An Elephant Sitting Still because of Hu's suicide. It was deeply moving, clearly still reeling from grief but also was so proud that so many people cared about the work of his favorite student

Last month, László Krasznahorkai won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Today, Béla Tarr, his closest friend and most vital artistic collaborator passed away, as if the world allowed him to remain just long enough to witness and share in that recognition.

Might not even be Tarr’s best opening shot!

The ten-minute-long single-take opening shot of Werckmeister Harmonies, where Valuska stages a solar eclipse using the bodies of bar patrons, remains completely magical to me.

Average shot lengths in Béla Tarr’s films.

RIP Béla Tarr. A director so uncompromisingly himself (with the help of his incomparable editor and wife Ágnes Hranitzky) that his longest film is shorthand for slow cinema in many minds and hearts. If you haven’t already, watch his film DAMNATION.

Tom’s got a closed fist and he knows how to wrap his knuckles on the door of the man who owns it all. That’s what happens to promoted men. They turn their punches into knocks. But at the end of the day, that fist is all they’ve got. MULES IN PASSENGER SEATS by @kodakrabbit

The way I thought she was talking about FX hit cop drama The Shield starring a Michael Chiklis

I’ve watched this at least twice a day since it was uploaded, one of the best MVs I’ve seen in a long long time

RIP D’Angelo, don’t even know what to say. Three timeless albums, each one an incredible expansion of his sound—a peerless, flawless discography. It wouldn’t even be crazy to say he released the best album of the 90s, the 2000s, and the 2010s. One of our greatest artists.

Not gonna dunk on that annoying Onita tweet because you should all know how great he is. Go watch the Texas Death Street Fight from 4/1/90 again. You know you want to.
