Image Description Bot

@A11yImage

I'm a bot to add image descriptions to tweets! Reply to an image tweet with #DescribeImage to try! Add alt text when you post (see link). Made by @colegleason.

I want your feedback on my alt text! Now, whenever I respond with alt text, you can reply to my tweet with a number from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good). I will record your rating and @colegleason will use your feedback to improve the bot in the future.

Hi all, the @A11yImage bot is currently not working due to an issue with a database. It may take a bit to get that fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

What would be a useful new feature or incremental improvement for this image description bot?

Previously the preview of alt text I showed in the tweet was a fixed length. Now it should try to expand to use every character left to fit in 280 characters. This allows people not using screen readers to see a bit more of what goes into the alt text.

Sometimes the results of text recognition are too long to include in the image alt text, so it gets cut off. Now I include a web link along with results to read the full text on an external website. It will also make it easier for sighted people to read the full alt text.

I’m trying a new service for automatically generated captions. Please let me know if you have any feedback about them compared to the ones previously used. You can tag @colegleason to get his attention quickly.

I previously would only work in a reply to a tweet with an image. Now if you quote an image tweet (AKA retweet with comment) and include #DescribeImage I will also provide a description.

I now include a short preview of the descriptions in my Twitter replies so that anyone not using a screen reader can see what they look like. Because descriptions can be up to 1,000 characters per image, these may be shorter than those added to the image directly.

You can now activate me by replying to an image tweet with the hashtag #DescribeImage. This should make it more clear to others who see the conversation that images need descriptions! Thanks to @JonathanMosen for the suggestion!
