It's been a minute since I've posted one of these, but I've been compiling lots of good stuff to share. New AI for Educators Notebook is up. genedu.beehiiv.com/p/wn-24
No need to be embarrassed. This is a great use case that works for a lot of people. For those who haven’t tried it, no special prompting necessary. Just chat. Pi and Claude are 2 other free apps that are great for this
i’m somewhat embarrassed to admit it, but i genuinely find chatgpt to be helpful and supportive when i’m anxious
Scrambling through your voter's guide before Tuesday's election? Google's NotebookLM has been a super helpful tool for me. Upload documents and get summaries, ask questions, generate customized podcasts, add notes... all rooted in the docs w/ citations. Nifty little workspace.
This is a perfectly fine approach, but shouldn’t be the only approach students are exposed to. Writing w/o using AI is a skill. Using available tools (like AI) to enhance your writing/efficiency/productivity is a skill. Both have their value, and each can aid the other.
My kid, now a freshman in college, told me her professor announced today (first day of class) that she’s so tired of obvious AI generated essays that she’s carving time out for in class essay writing: shorter essays, hand written, with just the printed primary source material.
With the rate of development of these AI models, now is a good time to revisit that prompt you tried last year. If you want to try out different models side-by-side to see which one works best for your needs, the @lmsysorg chatbot arena (lmarena . ai) is a great place to do it!
Remember, there are multiple levels to AI use as a teacher. For example: You may not feel comfortable using AI to grade writing, but you might find value in being able to instantly generate questions for students that challenge them to think critically about their submission.
AI Literacy 101: The first response pulled from pre-loaded training data (and told you as much). The second one searched the web for info (indicated by the text, “Searched 3 sites”). It’s not a conspiracy theory, just edit your prompt to clarify your request. I had no issues:
Turning your focus to the upcoming school year? Here are 4 frameworks to consider for integrating AI into your classroom, 7 ways to use AI to bolster your summer planning sessions, and more! genedu.beehiiv.com/p/wn-23
Some of these AI ads during the Olympics have me shaking my head 🤦♂️ “Hey Gemini, write a letter from my daughter to her hero about how much she inspires her.” No, let your kid do that.
One of the key lessons from @The74’s piece on the major struggles facing LAUSD’s ambitious “Ed” chatbot, summed up nicely by the CEO of @ISTEofficial: At this point, your AI efforts should be focused on exploration and skill-building, not trying to find the perfect tool.
Love it or hate it, AI music generators are here. Do they belong in the classroom? Plus: 🌍 Combatting techno-colonialism 📄 Claude’s “Artifacts” ✍️ A killer prompt for everyone And more! Check out this week’s AI for Educators Notebook genedu.beehiiv.com/p/wn-22
Wow, lots of interest in these. I know a ton of kids in LA who would jump at the opportunity. Any LA companies willing to host? Would love to help out! Check the site for details ⬇️
If you know a 9th-12th grader near one of the cities below who is interested in tech, the @mcuban Foundation (@markcubanai) is putting on free, 3-day AI bootcamps this fall. No experience necessary. Still time to apply. markcubanai.org
Engagement increases when students feel connected to the content they are working with. Summer is a great time to use generative AI tools to help make your content more: 📍🌎 Localized 🧕🏽🙋🏾♂️ Culturally relevant ⛹️♂️🎮 Tailored to student interests 📰 💬 Integrated w/ current events
ChatGPT is well known by now, but I’m still surprised how few people have even heard of, let alone tried, the other AI models out there. Poe (@poe_platform) is a great site/app that lets you play around with a bunch of these models all in one place. (Data from @risj_oxford)
For a while now, I haven’t been able to see the name “Al” (A-L) without subconsciously assuming it’s “AI” (A-I). This story about NBC rolling out AI Al Michaels for the Olympics brings me much joy and confusion.
“What are some opportunities to incorporate various perspectives into this lesson/unit?” A pretty killer prompt that’s an easy way to orient & augment a summer planning session:
Claude drafting & updating a student-facing document on the right as we hash out a history project on the left. Nifty setup. (Turn on "Artificats" in the "Feature Preview" setting)
