I tend to guard my privacy, so making a podcast was a new to me. But @juliecbarrett was a great host. Watch as we discuss, just how did we get here? How did education become more about therapy and less about instruction? Plus, how I started this account in the first place.

Teachers face two massive near-term pressures: 1. AI teachers, of course. 2. No kids to teach. They'll be among the jobs most devastated by demographic change in the near future.

Demographic crisis is coming sooner than you may think. We've hit peak 18-year-old. Unless colleges enroll less qualified students, they'll see total enrollment fall rapidly. Elementary, middle, and high schools will see class sizes fall and many will have to shut down too.

“Public schools are in shambles. Incentives are all wrong. Teachers and administrators are not focused on, or even invented to focus on, student success outcomes. Number one (explicitly) priority in our school district is emotional IQ and belonging. Not academic outcomes…” 🎯

We live in one of the best school districts in the state and this year made the decision to pull all 3 kids out and home school them, it’s so bad. Teachers won’t even help to correct these things. Our 11 year old has been holding a pencil and writing completely wrong for years…

Fourth and fifth graders at Alpha School in Austin, Texas, aren't just learning — they're pioneering education's new frontier. CBS News' @JanetShamlian has a look inside the $40,000 a year school where AI shapes every lesson, without teachers. cbsn.ws/4mJRD96

Last night, a shocking number of parents AND teachers at Scottsdale’s board meeting complained about proposed goal to get more 8th graders into algebra. Not mandate. Just goal setting. Meanwhile, in Asia…

China AI adaptive learning startup with 40M users in Asia built on Western research, designed by US data scientists. NOT built on social emotional learning theories, designed for content mastery. Future is hyper-competitive. Learning velocity important.

Imagine creating a product so bad that people would prefer to pay $40,000 to use a competitor rather than using yours for free That’s public school in a nutshell

How did we get here? Mission creep has turned schools into social service hubs instead of centers of learning. Standards prioritize activism over content. Curriculum is disjointed, inconsistent, and not vertically aligned to deepen knowledge. Teachers are set up to fail — no…

📁 Surprise, education *research* shows significant effect of p-hacking, “suspicious features” and bias.

All of this is to say, trials that suggest big effects in education are marked by... Suspicious features! Statistical aberrations and oddity, analytic flexibility and researcher degrees of freedom, and publication bias aplenty = big effects!

Laser-like Ladner for the win, again. Public school advocates continue down the Collins’ five stages of institutional decline as they grasp for any other reason to explain away failure. 👉Anything to avoid improving the product.

Bless her heart but @AZBethLewis has gone and published a bunch of claims that two whole minutes of googling comprehensively refute in the @ArizonaMirror. Beth claims that ESAs are leading to public school closures, but let's go myth busing and check the receipts/🧵

Elementary schools in Rockford, Illinois recently returned to grouping kids by ability. They discovered students are happier, teachers are happier, and test scores go up. We don't need brilliant new innovations to fix education. We just need to stop being so retarded.
