Is it weird that discovering “asshat” is a closed compound and that “diddley-squat” takes a hyphen brings me joy? #amediting


Yet another reason not to rely on spellcheck. Apparently “lepper” is a word, and it’s not someone with leprosy. It’s a horse that jumps. I used to jump horses, and I never heard of that one.


A “midnight snake” is not something I’d want to encounter in my kitchen after Thanksgiving. #amediting


Three examples of misused horse words I’ve come across recently in published books: comparing a gawky teen girl to a “gelding” (a neutered male horse); describing a chair as “whicker” (a sound a horse makes); and having a character “saddle up beside” another character.
