At The Sanctuary, every day is World Elephant Day — especially during August Elephant Awareness Month! The Q herd celebrated the big day over the weekend with apples and blueberry popsicles decorated like globes, as well as hay balls and culverts stuffed with grass and bamboo.
She received a cake decorated with Mazuri pellets, strawberries, and apples, bamboo, hay, and a whole watermelon. We are happy to have you in our herd, Jana!
Although we will certainly celebrate Jana on her arrival anniversary too, we decided to throw a little enrichment party for our newest herd mate in honor of her “real" birthday yesterday!
According to records, it's estimated that Jana was born at a zoo in South Africa on August 16, 1980. Our other elephants were born in the wild with unknown birth dates, so we traditionally celebrate on the anniversary of their arrival at The Sanctuary for consistency.
We're thankful that the Building For Bulls campaign is off to a great start, thanks to our supporters. Here is evidence of progress at the bull barn site, where the lot has been cleared and leveled and the structures of concrete and steel are going up! youtube.com/watch?v=cdXfdh…

Exciting things have been happening at Asia Habitat! Nosey has been very receptive to Jana's dominant nature, and the pair were seen interacting through their protected fencing for over an hour.
They exchanged tactile signals. Nosey put her trunk on her head and tusks up with an open mouth (which is known as amenable behavior), and Jana initiated some “friendly” sparring. When Jana stopped, Nosey gently brushed her with her tusks to encourage more sparring!
Care Staff watched as Nosey allowed Jana to touch her back, legs, and tail. When Nosey began to gain more confidence and familiarity with how Jana would react, she turned toward Jana, and the two touched trunks.
Flora beat the heat by dusting and mudding in her wallow, while Tange (pictured here) enjoyed a refreshing ice treat made by Care Staff using a variety of frozen produce, natural fruit juice, and water.
Staying cool has been the goal for Care Staff and elephants alike during the warm summer season in Tennessee. Sukari snacked on a watermelon so large it could not be picked up even by her extra-long and strong trunk.
Meet our newest resident at The Sanctuary, Donna! Donna made the journey from Oakland, California, to Hohenwald, Tennessee alongside dedicated @oakzoo staff and veterinarian, arriving on September 13. We look forward to sharing more about Donna's first days at The Sanctuary!
In case you missed it, Donna is officially here! We were thrilled to welcome her as The Sanctuary’s 32nd resident last week. Read more about her arrival in our latest EleNote: elephants.com/news/elenotes/…
It has been an honor to collaborate with @oakzoo on Donna’s transport from California to Tennessee. Learn more about her journey to The Sanctuary, including 30 watermelons for the most important part of a road trip — the snacks!
As you know, since Donna’s lifelong companion Lisa’s passing earlier this year, our mission has been to find new friends for Donna, who, like all female elephants, is very social by nature. We were fortunate to find an ideal place with three female African elephants Donna’s age…

It’s #ElephantAppreciationDay! Even though we devote every day to elephants at The Sanctuary, we love sharing this day dedicated to them with the world. What do you appreciate most about elephants?
Meanwhile, Jana and Sissy have occasionally been sharing a fence line too, which gives the elephants more variety in their habitat arrangements and more social opportunities! The pair have been getting to know each other with gentle touches through the protective barrier.
Jana and Nosey regularly engage in friendly sparring over the fence line. Sparring is a natural behavior for African elephants that involves playful pushing and trunk entwinement. They have also been observed standing near one another while resting or sharing snacks.
We are so excited to share that Jana and Nosey were provided with the opportunity to interact directly without fence lines for the first time! This moment has been long anticipated, as they have spent many weeks building their comfort with each other. youtube.com/watch?v=9rF5g9…

Demonstrating the characteristics of a dominant African elephant, Donna frequently exhibits natural behaviors such as ear flaring and holding her trunk high. Donna’s initial introduction to Flora, also known for her assertiveness, was a positive one! youtube.com/watch?v=97TC7K…
