Today's chess fact is about Dr. James McCune Smith. James McCune Smith was an American physician, abolitionist and first African American to hold a medical degree from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. He is also known for his elegant essay on the art of chess.😊 #ASAC
Maurice Ashley is a Jamaican-American chess player who earned the FIDE title of Grandmaster, which is said to make him the first Black person of this rank. However, Ashley himself challenges this idea, given the limited documented history of Black chess players. #ASAC #CHESS
