I have just picked up R. F. Kuang’s first book The Poppy War (part of Poppy War trilogy). It’s also her first book. The stunning bit is that she wrote it when she was 22. And she is still only 29.
Poem about your laugh
“Oh, your mouth is a diver’s bell; / it takes me down untold fathoms.” — Susan Glickman . . . This poem appeared in Henry Moore’s Sheep by Susan Glickman, published by Véhicule Press (@VehiculePress), 1990. Shared here with deep gratitude.
I realised the fitter I am getting, the more anti-fit clothes I am buying.
The breakfast and coffee after being up early for workout and chores and walking my dogs, hits different. Show me the bed please.
A few days back I came across a video where Simon Sinek talks about Christopher Waltz and his character of a Nazi officer in Inglorious Bastards. When asked how Waltz was able to play the evil character so well, he said that he didn’t view the character as evil. Quoting Waltz,…
‘Harmanpreet and co. took the trophy to Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra - all ex-captains - and asked them to lift it to the sky, as if to say, “This is your moment too.” Diana Edulji was in the stands, teary-eyed.’

I kind of know that this World Cup win for Indian women is huge. That @prempanicker piece makes me realise it’s bigger. Had goosebumps reading it.
‘Somewhere, far from any stadium, a ten-year-old girl will stand before a mirror, plastic bat in hand, and whisper commentary to herself. She will not be told that cricket is a boy’s game. She will not be told that ambition needs to be apologetic. She will see, in these champions…
‘For a country still negotiating gendered boundaries, the image of a women’s team lifting the biggest prize in cricket is subversive in the best possible way. It makes women’s presence in public spaces — running, diving, celebrating, commanding — utterly normal. It tells young…
‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.’
The moment with the recently retired players is the sweetest and most emotional. It’s their win as much as Harmanpreet’s. Or Jemimah. Or Smriti. It is a win for every woman who has played cricket for India.
Impossible to be dry eyed after watching the team bring over Mithali and Jhulan and Anjum to lift the trophy. If you've watched these guys long enough, you know what's come before, what they've endured. This is emotional beyond what words could convey.

So fitting for Harmanpreet Kaur to take running backwards match winning catch.
