I’m not an uncritical supporter of SV - I would prefer to use the Alternative Vote (AV) for single post elections. But SV did change elections - it made people freer to cast an honest vote, for their first choice and then their choice of the top two…
I’m in favour of PR but not SV. London Mayor election proof of why. 2021: 105,285 first preferences votes rejected for voting for too many candidates or unmarked (114,201 total) 2024: 11,127 votes rejected total SV never changed an election but did exclude thousands of voices

This is a marked increase from my peer-reviewed academic research into the previous decade (2006-14), which showed that 1 in 9 peerages were going to party donors. Now it’s 1 in 4. The problem is getting worse, not better.
In the last decade, 1 in 4 peerages have gone to party donors. Those donors have given £58 million to political parties, of which £53.4 million went to the Conservatives Seats in Parliament are being given out as subscriber benefits for party fundraising tortoisemedia.com/2024/04/04/hou…
🧵 It’s against the law to ‘sell’ seats to the House of Lords. Yet @TransparencyUK’s latest research shows nearly 25% of party nominated peers in the last decade were also party donors #UKPolitics #HouseofLords #Democracy #AntiCorruption mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
91% of policies to address the COVID-19 pandemic were completely gender-blind. Policy makers neglected the needs of women & gender-diverse people during COVID. This must be remedied in new pandemic response architecture views-voices.oxfam.org.uk/2024/02/why-we… @peoplesvaccine @FifaRahman @GbOxfam

Great to see @TimeOutLondon raising awareness of tuberculosis (TB) in the UK but there are some problems with this article 🧵🧵timeout.com/uk/news/why-is…
Very excited to be publishing this report. We have all seen the photo op moments where world leaders make commitments to tackle big issues. How do we ensure the pledges translate into action? This is what we think needs to happen in TB.

Yesterday a man accused me of faking my disabilities in public. My @DailyMirror column this week is about how the media and government are turning the public against disabled people, by dangerously portraying us all as benefit cheats mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
