#otd 1959, @MIT shut down Whirlwind. The vacuum tube computer ran 35 hours/week using electrostatic tube memory and laid the groundwork for the SAGE airspace system (v/@EvanKirstel).
#otd in 1976 the first major supercomputer was installed. The Cray-1 had a 64-bit processor and a top speed of 160 MFLOPS. For comparison, today’s top supercomputers are 20 billion times faster.
