I have just seen this staggering tweet from HMRC (screenshot below in case the original is withdrawn). It is indeed HMRC's responsibility to collect the tax people legally owe. But the loan charge seeks to collect that OTHER people owed. THAT IS WHY IT IS SO OFFENSIVE.

Many instances of folks phoning up HMRC about loan schemes before signing up, only to be told "no hallmarks of tax avoidance scheme". Even with SA enquiry, HMRC said "Only routine enquiry. We'll let you know if there is any problem". Years of radio silence and then entrapment.
