An aero engine can have up to three shafts, rotating inside each other, each connecting different turbine and compressor/ fan stages. At takeoff, the low pressure shaft runs at 3,000rpm, the intermediate pressure shaft at 6,000rpm and the high pressure one over 10,000rpm!
