Very honoured to be a guest at the NASUWT NI Conference. Thank you for such a warm welcome and many thought-provoking talks. Ronan Sharkey is an inspirational President and speaks with integrity and commitment. He is also a great PhD researcher at Ulster University.

Mr Sharkey concluded: "As we journey forward, let us remember that the power to transform education lies within us all. Let our passion for learning, our commitment to equity, and our unwavering dedication to our students guide us as we shape the future of education together. "
"It is not only a financial imperative but a moral imperative, that our education system becomes top priority for funding and reject the notion that teachers and school leaders should bear the brunt of budget cuts."
He said: "Teachers’ Teach. We cannot be expected to single-handedly compensate for the failures of the system, because this doesn’t solve the problem and we won’t become the rug in which you hide your problems under."
He added: "While the funding for these services were cut, the workload wasn’t, so where do you think that landed? Onto us! School leaders and teachers are increasingly expected to assume responsibilities traditionally fulfilled by specialist providers."
Mr Sharkey highlighted the "disturbing trend of budget cuts and austerity measures" in the education service. He said: "Healthy Happy Minds, gone; Engage Funding, gone; Period Poverty, gone; Holiday Hunger Payments, gone and the slashing of educational support services."
He added: "Industrial action, including strikes, serve as a powerful tool for us to voice our concerns, demand change and protect our profession and I remind Paul Givan that our members will use Industrial Action time and time again until the necessary changes are made."
On the strike action taken with 170,000 other public sector workers he said: "Together, we have marched side by side, rallied together, and raised our voices in solidarity. This show of unity sends a powerful message to those in power: that we will not be divided or silenced."
"For far too long, we have felt under-valued, disrespected, and neglected. But in the midst of these challenging times, it is heartening to see that our members have not stood alone in their fight for fair pay and equitable treatment."
"We have shouldered the burden of stagnant wages, enduring what is now coming up to, 4 years without a pay settlement while the cost of living continues to soar, and the crisis is wreaking havoc on households across the country."
