In early 1957, Capt. Green resigned his commission to become a commercial #airline pilot to earn more money to support his family. The airlines had never employed #Black pilots before and Green kept being denied employment due to his race. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/2
In 1957, #ContinentalAirlines invited him to take a flight test, unaware he was #Black because his application had no photo. He passed, but 5 other white, ex–@usairforce applicants, with far less experience than he had, were hired while Green was not. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/3
Believing he was the victim of racial discrimination, Green filed a complaint with the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Commission. CADC agreed and ruled that #ContinentalAirlines had to admit him to a training class. The #airline refused. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/4
After refusing, #ContinentalAirlines took the matter to the Denver District Court, which dismissed the case. Green hired a lawyer who appealed his case to the Colorado Supreme Court in 1960; it sent the case back to the Denver District Court. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/5
Green’s lawyer then petitioned the @USSupremeCourt to hear the case and was granted a hearing. US Attorney General Robert Kennedy and other influential figures & organizations filed “friend of the court” briefs on Green’s behalf. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/6
In 1963, the @USSupremeCourt sided with Capt. Marlon Green, which paved the way for David Harris to become the first #Black #pilot for a major U.S. airline, @AmericanAir. #ContinentalAirlines did eventually hire Green and named a plane after him. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/7
