Thanks @TheTyee for amplifying our call for a #covid19bc pandemic recovery task force for kids. Kids are sacrificing a lot and many are falling behind. @jjhorgan this can't wait. @FirstCallBC #bcpoli thetyee.ca/News/2020/07/0…

Thanks to Drs. Kobor, Schmidt, Loock, and @FirstCallBC for speaking up about our ask for an urgent kids' action plan in the #COVID19 recovery. Mental health and disparities are having a big impact. We must act now & together. #bcpoli

While the new BC poverty reduction strategy #togetherBC makes a welcome commitment to tackle deep poverty, it's hard to imagine how this can be achieved without substantial increases to welfare & disability rates and a more ambitious buildout of below-market housing. #bcpoli

That weak goal stems from the fact that govt remains unwilling to address the core need to boost social & disability assistance rates (as noted above), even though the cost of doing so is absolutely within govt's budget capacity: policynote.ca/deep-poverty/#… @PovReductionBC

Target to reduce deep poverty is also disappointing. Gvt says plan will result in *average* person in poverty having an income of 75% of poverty line. In contrast, @PovReductionBC has long called for *everyone* in poverty to reach at least 75% of pov line within 2 yrs.

Unfortunately, there were no additional increases in welfare & disability rates in today's strategy so people on welfare & disability assistance will continue to live in deep poverty (less than 75% of the poverty line). In my view, this is the biggest shortcoming of #togetherbc.

Thank you @PovReductionBC for your intelligent commentary on the Poverty Reduction plan released today. We are excited about this big step forward in #SDOH action in BC!

B.C.’s first ever Poverty Reduction Plan tracks strong start with comprehensive approach but gaps need to be filled moving forward: bcpovertyreduction.ca/2019/03/b-c-s-…
