It looks so weird to say that especially given that doing a PhD is already doing research...
A colleague said to me once you need a PhD to do research in mathematics. I'm not so sure. A piece of paper doesn't suddenly make you a mathematician. You get there through curiosity, passion, and by having fun.
There's a whole subgenre of scifi about humans colonizing mars, but I'm not aware of a single work which tackles the question of how astrology works on mars. E.g. martians don't have mars signs, but they do have earth signs. How does that affect things?
