We're happy to have Dr. Tanner McMahon from neurosurgery at @BrighamWomens collaborating with our team! The multidisciplinary cooperation of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry at @Brain_Circuits is really special. 🧠🙌
Honored to moderate a panel on noninvasive mapping of human brain circuits at @MGBResearchNews Neuroscience Day. Great insights from @nastasiayendiki @MGHMartinos, Fred Schaper @Brain_Circuits @BWHNeurology , Alex Golby @BWHNeurosurgery, Pranav Nanda @MGHNeurosurg.
Great showing by @Brain_Circuits at MGB Neuroscience Day. Drs. Shan Siddiqi, Fred Schaper, Joe Taylor, and John Rolston spoke on invited panels. Drs. Aaron Warren and Garance Meyer were selected to present their research on DBS for consciousness and psychosis.
Welcome @CANSARICA2 to @Brain_Circuits @BWHNeurology
Happy to share that I’ve officially started my #postdoc at the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics in Dr. Michael D. Fox’s lab at Harvard Medical School / Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Grateful to join his inspiring team and excited to contribute and learn—stay tuned for…
Can connectomic DBS go beyond where to stimulate to inform who and when? Great presentation and discussion @DBSThinkTank with John Rolston and Julian Neumann suggests the answer is yes! @Brain_Circuits
Nice summary of the new paper by @calvinwhow @Brain_Circuits on cognitive effects of DBS across Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, now out in @alzdemjournals
In a new study, researchers from @BWHNeurology and colleagues mapped the cognitive effects of deep brain stimulation. The study was published in @alzdemjournals. Read more: massgeneralbrigham.org/en/about/newsr… doi.org/10.1002/alz.70… @calvinwhow @foxmdphd @Brain_Circuits
How can DBS to the memory circuit hurt cognition in some patients but improve it in others? New work led by @calvinwhow @Brain_Circuits suggests it’s due to patient age. Surprise - older patients do better across both PD and AD!
New research from @harvardmed @brighamWomens @brain_circuits: We evaluated how DBS in Parkinson’s with Alzheimer’s influences cognition. Originally, it looked like DBS was deleterious for cognition in Parkinson’s, but could be beneficial in Alzheimer’s.
Sending off 2 of our best research assistants @Brain_Circuits to graduate programs that are lucky to have them. Congrats Grace and Jessy and we look forward to your ongoing success!
Great seeing the neurospirituality circuit mapping work of @neuromichael @Brain_Circuits showing up in @PopMech
“The sense of the sacred is something that has really strong grounding in the human brain,” says Michael Ferguson, Ph.D: archive.ph/TpZNY Great reporting on neurospirituality in Popular Mechanics! I stand by this parting shot: “I really think that we’re just barely…

MRI scans are becoming common in the courtroom and show abnormalities in defendants brains. But can any of these abnormalities actually cause #criminal behavior. New paper from @IsaiahNeurology @Brain_Circuits @MGBResearchNews in says YES. Thread below:
Can a brain injury lead someone to commit a #crime? Brain imaging is increasingly introduced as evidence in criminal trials but it remains unclear which structural injuries play a causal role in criminal behavior. @foxmdphd @Brain_Circuits @BWHNeurology nature.com/articles/s4138…
I thought the biggest impact of anticorrelations was guiding brain stimulation, but apparently I underestimated the musical creativity of @neuromichael @Brain_Circuits
Thank you to everyone @Brain_Circuits for the cake and the surprise celebration. Even bigger thank you to the 10k people who cited this paper!
Congrats to @foxmdphd, whose paradigmatic work on anticorrelated functional networks in the human brain has broken the 10k citation mark! This study has shaped the field. It has also deeply formed my own research, thinking, and career path. 🎉🧠
Is there an optimal lesion target for tremor relief that avoids side effects? @MelissaChuaMD @Brain_Circuits analyzed over 350 patients who received high intensity focused ultrasound to find one. Reproducible across surgeons and centers.
Our paper on the “sweetspot” for focused ultrasound in essential tremor was finally published last week in science advances! So happy to finally share this work and so thankful to everyone who helped make this happen. Read it here: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… @MGBneurosurgery
New direction from @nih “This human-based approach will accelerate innovation, improve healthcare outcomes, and deliver life-changing treatments. It marks a critical leap forward for science, public trust, and patient care.” @Brain_Circuits
Today, NIH announced a new initiative to expand innovative, human-based science while reducing the use of animals in research. This aligns with @US_FDA’s initiative to reduce testing in animals. bit.ly/4jYd4T2
In a new study, researchers from @BWHNeurology and colleagues found a generalized epilepsy network derived from brain abnormalities and DBS. The study was published in @NatureComms. Read more: bwhclinicalandresearchnews.org/2025/03/21/res… doi.org/10.1038/s41467…
The pleasure is all ours Gongjun! So great to do this one together ☺️
Lesions causing epilepsy map to a brain circuit, but what about generalized epilepsy? Great new paper (and thread) by @fredschaper_ @Brain_Circuits identifies this circuit with implications for #DBS.
Is generalized epilepsy a seizure of the whole brain or a specific brain network? In our new paper out now in @NatureComms we investigate this by combining brain abnormalities and DBS with the human connectome. Paper: nature.com/articles/s4146… A 🧵 below:
