We’re only c.12% self sufficient in fruit in 🇬🇧 yet farmers are tearing out orchards of British staples because retailers won’t pay a fair price 🍏 The comments from @the_brc in this piece are proof positive of why our food system can’t be ‘left to Tesco’ 👇

Wow! We have as much land area in golf courses as we do in fruit & vegetables. Very dependant on overseas grown food, hope there’s not a war or a pandemic to disrupt supply! We could change this with the right political and market support.

A few years ago I took part in a Chanel 4 discussion about Brexit and I focussed on the hostile language used towards migrant labour by some unpleasant politicians. Todays language towards ‘small boats’ is even more hostile and dangerous.

"We’re all farmers and we need to work together as the issues facing the organic forum are almost identical to other sectors, but they have a different emphasis." NFU Organic Forum Chair @Burgee2 explores how the proposed ELM scheme could impact the Organic sector at #NFUCouncil
You all really missing the point. Offsetting in itself is the problem, it does not bring about real change. If we are serious about change we should increase sequestration and reduce actual emissions. Not use one so that we can carry on with the other.
"What this is really about is the deregulation of agriculture and the environment, the liberalisation of trade policies." Govt may protest, but actions speak louder than words. Great advocacy from @herdyshepherd1. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…
Not surprising given the attention to detail (and compost) an allotment can receive. Surely the question is what’s the number of person-hours (and cost) per carrot? @Botanygeek? theguardian.com/environment/20…
Today projects across the country have been awarded a share of over £4M to restore precious #peatlands to a healthy and natural state. Hear what this means for biodiversity and climate change from our Minister @pow_rebecca ⬇️ gov.uk/government/new… #BuildBackGreener
Shopping @Tesco Horsham: roasting joints Christmas offers: almost 100% imported meats: no offence to other countries producers but do we really need so much? Especially Danish/Dutch/German pork when UK pig farmers on their knees? @NFUtweets #BiteIntoBritish #backbritishfarming
Today I visited farmers in Northumberland. The destruction by #StormArwen is devastating. Many many still without power & damage on farms that will take years in some places to rectify. Can’t help but think it might have got more attention if it wasn’t so far from London
