How can London's (and other cities') high streets be rid of uncollected commercial rubbish: onlondon.co.uk/how-to-rid-lon… @createstreets @CDALDN @RuthDuston @SouthBankBID
Our new report, supported by @CDALDN, @LondonHeritageQ & @SouthBankBID reveals how commercial waste management is failing Britain's high streets & what we can do about it...
What can be done ? We've 9 suggestions. Some can happen now using existing powers: 1⃣Refuse Buyers Clubs: Implement consolidation schemes, as in Bond St 2⃣ ‘Reverse Deliveroo’ for commercial waste collections. Encourage e-cargo bikes 3⃣ Centralised locations to deposit waste
In medium-term; 4⃣Push limits of existing powers. Councils could make better use powers available under Section 47 of Environmental Protection Act 1990 5⃣Make offenders Pay, review maximum penalty & fine levels 6⃣Reduce burden of proof making it easier to take action
Long-term: 6⃣Reduce number of town centre operators through more stringent licensing 7⃣Create new waste definition of ‘ordinary commercial’ permitting small businesses to use municipal collection 8⃣Create system of zoning & municipal carriers as in New York or Singapore.
"Our management of commercial waste is rubbish & it's time to fix it. For too long, we've learned to accept public squalor & filth. But that doesn't mean we don't care." says @Boys_Smith Do YOU want cleaner, more prosperous high streets? createstreets.com/rubbish-refuse/
Huge huge thanks to @CentralDAlliance @LondonHQ & @SouthBankBID for supporting this report. Big thanks to everyone who contributed their invaluable insights to this research. You can....
