Thank you for joining us for National #EstuariesWeek! We hope you learned some fun new facts and better appreciate the value of these important systems. Follow us all year to learn more about #estuaries! #CERFscience #EstuaryLove #WadeIn

🌍 Estuarine wetlands sequester carbon annually at a rate 10x greater than tropical forests & store 2-5x more carbon per equivalent area than tropical forests! They store massive amounts of carbon, helping fight climate change. #EstuariesWeek #WadeIn #BlueCarbon #ClimateAction

Let's celebrate our estuaries! What's your favorite estuary? Comment and let us know! Even better, post a photo or video and tag us! #EstuariesWeek #EstuaryLove #WadeIn

🐠 75% of commercial fish species depend on estuaries at some point in their lives! These "nurseries of the sea" provide safe havens for young fish, crabs, & shellfish to grow before heading to the ocean. No estuaries = no seafood! 🦐 #EstuariesWeek #EstuarineNursery #Seafood

Nonstop seagrass labwork for blue carbon 🌊🌿 Apparently, seagrasses store potential amounts of atmospheric carbon to mitigate climate change. Despite their high value, this ecosystem is threatened by the climate crisis and anthropogenic factors. ~Zostera marina in the pic

This #EstuariesWeek, let's talk living shorelines - innovative solutions that protect coasts while supporting vibrant ecosystems. It's protection that works with nature, not against it. Join RAE and @SavetheSound at the Living Shoreline Workshop 10/29-30 buff.ly/I2xrMEz
From kayaking to long walks on the beach, playing on the rocks to sailing down the river in a tub (?!) reserves are the perfect place to play! Congrats to the winners from the “Play” category! 📸 1: Chris Bowser 📸 2: Justin Ridge coast.noaa.gov/nerrs/about/ph… #EstuariesWeek #WadeIn

Why are estuaries called the “nurseries of the sea”? Because their calm, protected waters and abundant food sources make them perfect places for so many species to reproduce and spend the early part of their lives! 🐟🦀🦪 fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/… #EstuariesWeek

#DidYouKnow? Estuaries provide critical habitat, filter pollutants, and reduce flooding to protect our coastal communities. 🌊 Healthy estuaries are a critical piece of coastal resilience. ⭐ ASBPA’s efforts complement healthy estuaries in building coastal resilience.

What do the Ancient Sumerian city of Ur, Ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, and modern-day Baltimore, Maryland, have in common? They were built along #estuaries! Fertile soil, abundant wildlife, and freshwater near estuaries have been a bedrock of human civilization for millennia.

📸 From birdwatching to kayaking, estuaries attract millions of tourists each year! These biodiverse hotspots offer world-class recreation & contribute billions to local economies. Pack your binoculars and explore an estuary near you! 🦅⛵ #EstuariesWeek #EcoTourism #NatureLovers

Estuaries come in different shapes and sizes. Geologically there are 5 different types of estuaries; the majority of estuaries located on the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts are coastal plain, bar built, or deltaic. What kind of estuary do you have near you? #EstuaryLove #WadeIn

🛡️ Estuaries are our coastal communities' first line of defense! Habitats such as salt marshes, coral reefs, & mangroves can reduce storm surge heights & wave energy. Mother Nature's own flood protection system at work! #EstuariesWeek #WadeIn #CoastalResilience #ClimateAdaptation
