I've just watched Martin Evans' talk for @theAGU #AGU20 on the @ProtectNFM work and results on restoration and #NFM in #peat #peatlands . Some really great results 👏👏👏 And it's doubly interesting having grown up close to the study sites near Glossop!

I would love it if you stopped using the term "blockages". #WoodinRivers is habitat. If you need to remove habitat from rivers, please do it reluctantly & with justification, not as a matter of routine!! @theriverstrust @WildTroutTrust @SalmonTroutCons @EAGeomorphology

Before and after pics. Our field team has been working in the Alcester area #Warwickshire to prevent blockages by clearing a fallen tree from the River Arrow #flood #teamEA

This is absolutely NOT the way to go @EnvAgency. By all means split the sub-measures of progress into two - morphological and chemical/bio - and extend the timeframe, but abandoning the "one out all out" rule obliterates the fundamental principle of WFD. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Another report showing how f….. poor we are managing our Rivers. So here is a #thread about why the major problem are Barriers, what is the ultimate solution (and it is EASY). theguardian.com/environment/20….

Since 1970, populations of migratory river fish in Europe have fallen by 93% 📉 This has huge implications for the functioning of entire ecosystems, far beyond the rivers themselves; the livelihoods of people around the world; and global food security 👇 theguardian.com/environment/20…

So cool that these are captured on video!

On 18 July 2020 a #landslide occurred on the Rio Coca in #Ecuador, blocking the river. Both the initial failure and the breach of the landslide dam were captured on video:- blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/…

I spy with my little eye - something beginning with, ‘W’ ? We collected a skip full of ‘em in 4 days at one of our sites! 😳 Some products state they are ‘flushable’ & you can clearly see they aren’t! We will continue to push for change BUT in the meantime please #BinTheWipe

We call these totter bogs,so wet that they ripple. 🌊 Healthy blanket bog is rarer than rainforest & more effective per acre in storing carbon than the Amazon. It’s all about water needs to be wet, wet, wet for peat regeneration. *There’s a reason I’m going on about this*

Last 11 weeks of rainfall. Very unusual to see no blue (Midlands) More unsettled at the moment but no signal for prolonged rain for our part of the world. Many river flows exceptionally low.

Cumbria's experiencing some of its lowest river levels following record temperatures in May. Some catchments have dried up completely, including the River Derwent at Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale Valley

This is climate breakdown. Met Office UK rainfall records: - Left: Feb 2020. 400%+ average rainfall in North England & Wales. Massive floods - Right: May 2020. Less than 20% average rainfall for large swathes of England & Wales. Drought looming #ClimateEmergency

The Lower Wye today. Pea soup from floating algae in the water column. This is what discharging nutrients into rivers does in hot weather. The temperature will rise even higher (it was 72F yesterday) Will our protected species survive? @WGEnviroAgri @Lesley4Wrexham @NatResWales

Sheep grazing to the left. Regenerating moorland to the right. I love seeing this formerly managed moorland turn to woodland with the simple help of a fence. The volume of bird song through here suggests they love it too! #keepthesheepout #whatadifferenceafencemakes
