This is what happens when govts abandon their obligation to build a good society, capitulate to “the market” and ignore the principle of housing as a human right. This is an easy fix. Legislate to outlaw developer apartheid against social tenants and build more public housing.

Ty @canberratimes for this article, particularly for sharing a quote that exposes the minister actively lying about what her proposal does. It will not at all work like a payment suspension for someone on remand – it is a payment cancellation & there is no access to ART review.

Robodebt was a mass deception based on a cruel bet: That people on income support would simply give up and pay debts they didn't owe. Today I tabled a petition from @MadgwickKath and @JennyMi11374978 calling for those responsible to finally be held accountable.

Let's rephrase this please Minister. We do not want you, in a heated moment, with #police, deciding to cut someone's #right to #socialsecurity *before* they go to court. Remember that principle: #InnocentUntilProvenGuilty @AusHumanRights @AusLawReform @MarieColemanAO @terese_smfa

So, @tanya_plibersek lost the public argument on this wretched amendment, allowing police to cancel Centrelink payments for ppl who have not been found guilty So she went on Sky News to defame legal, disability, & community advocates as well as Senator Thorpe revolting stuff

At the #RobodebtRC, the Commissioner made it clear that the long-standing practice by successive governments of using welfare policy to punch down for cheap political gain was an underlying cause of that unlawful scheme. #Robodebt was never about a few bad apples.

Aus is supposed to be a country where the rule of law & natural justice applies. The Gov’s sneaky attempt to strip welfare from people before they’ve been convicted of any crime is a fundamental breach of these principles. We may as well dissolve the court system #auspol #politas

Disturbing to hear @tanya_plibersek twist our words. She tells Sky news about #senators & advocates who believe fugitives shd continue to get #jobseeker. We say anyone is #innocent until proven guilty. Not up to police & politicians to take away their #right to #socialsecurity

If cops can be suspended WITH PAY while being investigated for killing Blak fullas, then every other person suspected of a crime can continue to receive their welfare payments FFS

Thank you @WilkieMP and @SenatorThorpe. This is the most basic principle of what they call the "justice" system, and they want to strip it away with no scrutiny.

Heartbreaking to listen to @nitagreenqld defend the taking of the right to #SocialSecurity for those with outstanding warrants for serious offenders. Who are you thinking of? Desi Freeman? What about his kids? And all the Aboriginal women misidentified as perps of fv???

Thanks to @senatorpennyqld and @Greens for their staunch opposition to the bill that will take the right to #SocialSecurity from some people on #arrest. This is a denial of our international & national obligations. Distressing to have it come from @AUSLaborRBLX

Tax breaks are breeding & feeding the #HousingCrisis Yes, it might be hard to remove these incentives but not doing so just condemns another generation to profound housing difficulty, affects decisions like having kids & harms us all socially & economically. @AlboMP

Housing affordability is going to keep deteriorating until we start treating housing as a human right & have a sensible conversation about tax, skills, migration & population settings. abc.net.au/news/2025-11-0… We need tough policy decisions not to just keep doing more of the…

Labor is trying to sneak through laws to give police and ministers power to cancel Centrelink payments for people who have a warrant against them. Punishing people before they stand trial is fundamentally wrong. We cannot let Labor get away with this. lidiathorpe.com/mr_reject_poli…

This is 100% unacceptable. Being poor is difficult enough. Having to deal with unethical and inefficient systems just piles on top. Keep in mind that in every #paymentsuspension that involves a family, #children suffer. @CFECFW @ACOSS @JEChalmers @SNAICC @womeninpoverty1
