Plant breeding would be a whole lot easier if you selected for grain yield in a bubble, but what you end up selecting is a package of traits that collectively give you yield and hopefully stability and longevity for that variety.
A few last notes on the increases before the come out. We plant many more than we can handle, so a ton of data is analyzed and synthesized to decide what to harvest. One of the most nerve racking things about July for me. We will finish up harvest this week. @coloradowheat

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting several VIPs from CSU at ARDEC to learn about the Wheat Breeding program. We are so thankful that they were able to join us! Attendees included Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. Marion Underwood, as well as Deans from four colleges
All the good conversation happens when five @ColoradoStateU Deans, the Provost, @coloradowheat and myself get together in a wheat field. What a great day to be a wheat breeder in Colorado!

The crew rescued a Swainson’s Hawk (I believe) from the headrow field yesterday and delivered it to the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program.
My pleasure, fun group and they all took home a bag of CSU Wheat Quality Lab flour. Looking forward to the bake off!

I had the distinct honor yesterday to ride combine with a producer harvesting @PlainsGold Fortify SF. What a thrill to understand more about how that wheat has contributed to profitability on their farm. How lucky I was to spend my career as a wheat breeder.
Walsh and Lamar wheat variety trial results are posted! Trial avg. yields of 38.5 and 43 bu/ac, respectively. Orchard data coming early next week. csucrops.org/winter-wheat/
