Our 2nd Growth, Not Grades contest winner is Sharlyn Barrett! Her essay explores the connection between body image + grades, showing how perfectionism erodes self-worth, motivation, purpose. She calls for education that values growth, not numbers. growbeyondgrades.org/blog/degrading…
BA. Being invited to collaborate more and to work with colleagues to help make the school, as a whole, a better place for everyone that is part of it. Talking more with Ss about them, how they think, and how school could be better #teachpos
A3. I think school becomes less about authentic play and creativity and more about disingenuous tasks and compliance as Ss get older. More is about performance on tests and standardized exams than actually learning. More pressure to secure a future by an arbitrary date #teachpos
A2. Everyone needs to feel a sense of belonging. Staff need to feel valued and that their contributions matter. Staff need to be treated like professionals and trusted to be there to care for and help the Ss in front of us. Being treated as human, not replaceable things #teachpos
A1. Build strong relationships, show Ss that you’re side-by-side with them, not judge, jury, and executioner. Give Ss the freedom to make mistakes and help Ss pick themselves back up after. Create community in the classroom, show them strength is working together #teachpos
Let's keep the conversation going! Thank you to our amazing organizers and facilitators for creating such an impactful event. Great things are happening across this wonderful country of ours. #assessment
Such an amazing conference this past week! Great conversations and great connections! Anyone looking at assessment change should definitely attend a @CAFLNetwork conference in the future!
The Summer Institute has been such an amazing event, with so much more great learning ahead. #assessment
Today we gather on Treaty 1 territory to begin our @CAFLNetwork Summer Institute. We look forward to rich, engaging conversations. #assessment #teacherpd
I previously used the Skills-Tracking Form, but have a couple of ideas that I'm playing around with for the coming year. The last couple years made it very clear how important weekly reflection can be. Thoughts? #iteachphysics #ungrading
BA: it’s too easy to focus on what others think of us, especially if it’s negative. Focus on what we can control, our own thoughts and feelings, and letting go of what others do. I 💯 agree with Craig that we need to surround ourselves with those that lift us up #teachpos
BQ for #teachpos see my answer. Also, fantastic chat. Give me some topics for future chats please.
A3: there’s no avoiding it, but some days it feels like everything is stacked against you. It’s most important to celebrate the little victories on those days, to look for little moments of good. #teachpos
Question three for #teachpos - I’d say it’s a combo of our own inability to see the big picture, and also outside forces tend to be negative in nature.
A2: For me, it often requires staying away from the toxic mindsets. Focus on the Ss in front of me, making a difference, and family at home. I remind myself that I’m trying to make large-scale change bc I want something better for my children and all Ss in the future #teachpos
Here we go with question two for #teachpos So much of it is about creating habits that help it to happen. Also, remembering that we control how we feel.
A1: I try to always show optimism, patience, compassion, and kindness. I think I tend to be that way most of the time for most people #teachpos
Here we go with question one for #teachpos Out of a ten, I’m usually around 8-9. I tend to be grateful for the thugs I have. Which helps my mindset.
Chris from Manitoba. Physics teacher and working to change education. Staying positive means cherishing family time, exercise, and focusing on positive, meaningful relationships with students #teachpos
Welcome to #teachpos - our weekly chat about education and all things wellness related. Please tell us your name, title and tag some friends to join. Tonight is about a POSITIVE MINDSET!!
BQ: I talk a lot about mental health and advocate for change to education that will improve wellness of the Ss in my classroom. Discussions about how assessment affect student well being to how letting them see Ts’ passion for their subjects #teachpos
A3: working out and eating healthy help with my ankles, but they continue to deteriorate. Meditation, being thankful, and distancing myself from negativity help me to keep a positive attitude throughout. I’m fortunate to have a wonderful wife and kids that support me #teachpos
A2: sleep is what I need to stay mentally healthy, but exercise goes with that too. Having my ankles continue to degrade over the years (broke both long ago) makes both challenging as pain management is a big part of my life. Keeping a positive attitude can be difficult #teachpos
Here is question number 2 for #teachpos I think for me it’s sleep. I tend to wake up too often in the middle of the night. But I’m good at set times.
A1: try to focus on the good things. It’s easy to get caught up in the bad, especially when we sometimes feel surrounded by it. When I’m with my kids, I try to take a moment to just look at them, take a breath, and be thankful for them. #teachpos
Chris from Manitoba! Happy to be able to join! I just started going back to school again for my PhD so healthy habits are key! Exercise is every second day for me and keeps me healthy, but finding something to be thankful for every day is most important (my kids) #teachpos
Welcome to #teachpos! Thx for joining our chat. Please tell us your name, title and tag a few friends to join. Feel free to answer the question below.
A3. Parents have important insights into where their children are at and how to challenge them and often how to help them best #teachpos
Here is question three!!! I think parents are key for communicating about their child. Also, being on committees also can really help. #teachpos
