Returning 2 Israel, the family settled in Nazareth, where Joseph taught his Son carpentry. He spent considerable time in the temple, & the people marveled at His knowledge of Scripture. At the age of 30, Jesus would begin His earthly ministry, which is chronicled in the Gospels.

When Herod learned the magi had deceived him, he became enraged and inexplicably ordered the killing of all male children, two years old and under, in Bethlehem and all its vicinity. Thankfully, for all mankind, Jesus and His parents were under divine protection!

Gold symbolizes Jesus’ divinity, God in the flesh. Frankincense is a fragrant white resin or gum, when burned, symbolizing His holiness and righteousness. Myrrh is a spice used in embalming, symbolizing the bitterness, suffering, and affliction He will endure.

“Do not be afraid of sudden fear nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; 4 the LORD will be your confidence & will keep your foot from being caught” (Prov. 3:25-26). “Do not be afraid, little flock, 4 your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).

Herod had no intention of worshiping the Christ Child! He wanted 2 eliminate this perceived threat 2 his throne. The Chief Priest & other religious leaders would also come 2 view Jesus as a threat to their political power & prestige & would eventually devise a plan 2 kill Him.

The magi were not kings, but magicians or astrologers thought to be from Persia. They appeared to have known the prophecies of the Messiah contained in the Hebrew Scriptures. Under divine control, “His star” moved to guide their way and settled over the location of the manger.

Excited by the news the angel of the Lord shared, the shepherds set out for Bethlehem to see the Child and tell of their angelic encounter. “Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart” (v. 19). They returned to their flock, “glorifying and praising God” (v. 20).

Usually, shepherds were the last to be told anything because of tending sheep, but they were the first to hear the news of the Messiah’s birth. Heaven is split open as the angels sing God’s praise! The shepherds echo their joy and reverberate throughout the Gospel.

Because of the many gathered in Bethlehem for the census, there was no room for Joseph and Mary to stay. Consequently, the Son of God and King of kings entered our world in the humblest of locations, in a stable.

On the verge of giving birth, Mary and Joseph make the arduous journey south from Galilee to Bethlehem (~80 miles) to comply with the census order. Bethlehem was King David’s birthplace and the registration point for his descendants.

Joseph became aware of Mary’s pregnancy, which was concerning to him. Being a kind, self-sacrificing man, he intended to “send [Mary] away secretly” (v. 19). The angel’s comforting words confirmed that this virgin birth was in keeping with God’s will and redemption plan.

“Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there” (Ps. 139:7-8). “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him” (Heb. 4:13).

Elizabeth’s response to Mary was extraordinary. She understood the response of the child in her own womb, as well as the immense importance of the child Mary was carrying— the long-hoped-for Messiah!

The reaction of the babe within Elizabeth’s womb to the presence of Mary and her developing “Prince of Peace” leaves little doubt of the presence and the work of the Holy Spirit.
