Homeschooling lets my eight-year-old take a day off to do this if she wants to. Bonus: she can describe some of the things around her in Latin.

My eight-year-old is going through a photography phase. She has my old DSLR camera with a few lenses, and is watching a photography course on The Great Courses. It's breaking my heart a little, because photography has no future now with AI. 😞

I like how Melania coordinated her dress to match the colors of Trump's decaying hand. Lovely.

it's an especially good weekend to log off and do soul-nourishing things: board games, gardening, writing, hiking in late summer splendor, picking basil, reciting poems, reading for education, reading for joy, reading for any reason whatsoever.

It's truly shocking what a literate culture we had a century ago. Millions of working-class people reading Austen, Sophocles, Thucydides. The decline in literacy is the result of a concerted attack by the rich on the lower classes to disempower us. You have to resist by reading.

I met a young man of 23 last week and he told me he had never in his life read an entire book. How common do you think that is?

If your local high school has, like many schools, 2/3 of the students not reading proficiently but a graduation rate approaching 100%, you should be asking the administration some very uncomfortable questions.

Yeah, this definitely isn't the timeline I would have chosen.

Frankly I don't like living in an era where no one can read, Big Tech is trying to abolish the educational system as we know it and PBS is gutted because those in power don't see the value in offering children educational programming to counter the ceaseless tide of slop.

The problem isn’t people misreading NAEP scores. The problem is kids can’t read—and defenders of balanced literacy still want to debate definitions instead of solutions.

My older daughter is at a piccolo lesson and my younger daughter is at the farmer's market with Dad so I actually got to take a long walk with my best girl instead of outsourcing it to the kids. Heelers are crazy, but you'll never find a more loyal friend.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/… The problem with this piece is that there is a chasm of difference between reading at grade level and reading fluently. The argument that "Actually, only a third of students can't read at grade level," shouldn't reassure anyone.
