Samples from bottled water, tap water and household-treated tap water in San Francisco Bay Area indicate that all sources may have potential health risks," according to the scientists who did the tests, the results of which were published in the journal PLOS Water.


Published in late August in the journal Nature Communications the research was based on a 2019 poll of almost 150,000 people in 141 countries.


The San Francisco findings follow the separate findings on widespread fears over water quality. Distrust of water supply appear to be highest in countries where corruption and political mismanagement have separately been measured as relatively high.


The team, from Berkely-based environmental testing business SimpleLab and Case Western University in Ohio, said that water quality and safety are dropping due to old and poorly maintained infrastructure, climate change and bad governance.
