I don’t understand - STL is roughly 4 hrs away from KC, CHI, IND, and MEM. KC is even farther away from other major cities and I don’t think we think it’s had the same fate as STL.
The most convincing replies I've seen are this, and kinda, sorta contingent outcomes with airports.

Honestly it should be considered child abuse to ever put your child in a car (even in a car seat) unless it's 100% necessary. Putting a child's life in that much danger just so you can go shopping or whatever then coping by TYING the child into a seat is insane behavior
