Ipswich Museum conservation. Cleaning of a 19th century Moroccan woman's veil. Yellow metal coins decoration and braid sewn to cloth and velvet. Textile shielded with strips of Melinex whilst metal chemically cleaned washed and treated with microcrystalline wax.
Ipswich Museum Conservation. Bundles of grass in an old corset box. Grass labelled Nov 18th 1901. Box cleaned and conserved and grass repacked in acid free tissue. A new Correx box was made to contain the corset box and grass.
Ipswich Museum Conservation. A collection of dirty shells and archaeological objects . Probably from Caribbean/South America. Paper in box dated to 1909. One large shell broken. Cleaned, large shell reconstructed. Old packaging cleaned and kept. All transferred to new box.
Ipswich Museum Conservations. Conservation for Mythical creatures Exhibition in Colchester. Cleaning a large elephant skull we found a collection of objects pushed up its nasal passages by generations of kids. The Anglo American chewing gum company, sweet wrappers from BHS etc.
Ipswich Museum conservation for redevelopment. Ashley has been reconstructing a large crab brought from Vladivostok in 1920. Some feet were missing. He carefully cast one of the original feet, made copies and painted them to match. The completed crab was attached to a board.
Ipswich Museum Conservation. Cleaning and stabilising 5 Frankish studs possibly from a sword. Found Rendlesham Suffolk. Cleaned and stabilised. Treated with BTA, and a lacquer under vacuum. depicting the same interlace design.
Ipswich Museum conservation. Oval decorated shield from Australasia. Terminal has broken. The terminal was re-attached with neutral acid free PVA in water. Gap filled with glass micro balloons in Paraloid B72. Carefully rubbed down and retouched with water soluble paint.
Ipswich Museum Conservation. Michael has been cleaning the heads from the Market Cross demolished in 1812. The heads, with original paint, depict men and women from Ipswich and date from 1550. Cleaned with Symperonic on swabs. Paintings dated circa 1800
Ipswich Museum Conservation for redevelopment. Michael has been cleaning a medieval spandrel depicting 2 butchers pole axing a bull. Vacuumed, brushed, wet cleaned and waxed to bring out the colour. The original paint can de seen after cleaning.
Ipswich Museum Conservation for redevelopment. A model of the market cross on the Corn Hill. Posts missing, statue missing, dirty. Painting about 1800. Ashley has carved a replacement, and Carrie replaced the posts. Cleaned retouched Original statue still exists in Town Hall.
Ipswich Museum conservation for the re-display. Ashley has been reconstructing butterflies and insects, re-attaching missing legs and antennae using B72 and Japanese tissue. Re-joining bodies with tissue and small dowels. Removing old insect infestation and frass.
Ipswich Museum conservation for redevelopment. Caleb and the team have been cleaning skeletal material for the new displays. Simply de-ionised water, Symperonic and swabs. The wires are brittle and corroded so we are being very careful.

Ipswich Museum conservation for the redevelopment. our Inuit Kayak came into the museum in 1853. We have a asked a specialist conservator to come to the museum and advise us on its conservation. The Kayak is presently crated but it will be unpacked and conservation started soon.
Ipswich Museum conservation for the redevelopment . A Victorian glass dome of birds. Dome carefully removed and glass cleaned. Birds cleaned with Symperonic and swabs. Crushed feathers returned to shape with cold steam. Some birds repositioned for safety. Work by Ashely and Peter
Ipswich Museum conservation for the redevelopment. Volunteers have been carefully cleaning parrots. The birds have been vacuumed, cleaned with swabs and Symperonic detergent, patted dry and feathers teased and brushed back into place. Their colour has returned.
Ipswich Museum. Conservation for redevelopment. Beaded leather apron cleaned with Synperonic detergent and boxed ready for redisplay. Fragile peacock feather fan repackaged. Fan is shedding feather parts. Unfortunately little can be done except to carefully store and display.
Here is Ashley working on some extinct Huia Birds for the Ipswich Museum redevelopment display. The birds had mould on them.
Today I'm working on these Huia birds. The glass and birds need a clean and then I'll have to reconstruct the glass case.
Ipswich Museum conservation. A volunteer has been cleaning a Fijian model outrigger canoe presented in 1925. The model is made of wood with vegetable fibre sail and cabin, wooden oars and bailers. Cleaned with a vacuum, a smoke sponge and swabs. Treated with microcrystalline wax.
Ipswich Museum Conservation. Couriering, condition reporting and readying for display some of our Constables lent to the National Gallery for their new exhibition. The Mill Stream, Kitchen Garden, Flower Garden, Willy Lott's House, and a model of the East Bergholt singers 1800.
