Sir Frederick Grant Banting was born on this day in 1891 in Alliston, Ontario. His co-discovery of insulin would garner him a Nobel prize and a lasting effect on medicine.

Tomorrow on the podcast, I look at Canada in 1891 (supposed to be 1890 but I mixed it up accidentally). A year that saw John A. die, a mining disaster, the first Edmonton-Calgary railroad and the birth of one of the greatest Canadians in history, Frederick Banting.
#OnThisDay in 1921, Canadian scientists Frederick Banting and Charles Best successfully isolated insulin, a hormone they believed could help prevent diabetes. After seeing the treatment's success, they gave pharmaceutical companies license to produce insulin, free of royalties.
