Government should not be spending anymore money on building more prisons as it defeats the objective to decrease the population as promised. They should be spending this on more health care & installing in-cell phones, toilets & sinks for the existing prisons that are without.
We often sit & watch while prison staff eat apples they bring in for lunch - we have not had fruit for 10 yrs. An officer gave an inmate an apple he wasn't going to eat & was walked out & fired. If only they would show such concern with staff selling us heroin & fentanyl.
I am so grateful for the generosity of those who donated funds for the book & reintegration projects. Today, I ordered 10 GED PREP BOOKS, 50 STAMPS, & 15 BOOKS FOR BOOKCLUB. I'm blown away with the outpouring of generosity for the 128 men in this unit

Couple of things to remember. Addiction is real & shouldn't be criminalized. It's a disease. Depression, anxiety, etc are real issues. You never know what people are going through. Sometimes asking a person how they are can be the difference b/w a life or death situation. Show❤
Did you know nothing in prison is free? Not even basic hygiene items like a bar of soap. If you can't afford basic items you will accrue debt. Perpetuating cycles of poverty that are part of the reason many people end up in prison in the first place. #EverydayPrisonFacts
Tomorrow I'll be pacing the floor while Kyle takes his GED. A group of us tutored him for 6 wks - I helped with writing. His goal is to have a better life when he's released in 2 yrs. He's 68 now - and he gives me hope for realizing it's never too late #positivity
When a new guard or visitor come to a prison, they inevitably say, "It's nothing like I thought, there are educated, good people here, that I can't imagine being in prison," and I reply, "We have spent our years learning, changing, improving--now we just need people to see us."
