Virtually no ammonoids are known from the Belgian Eifelian but here is one! #OpenAccess in @GeolBel_journal! Collected >100 years ago by Eugène Mailleux, kept safe in the @RBINSmuseum collections, but back then misidentified as a Nautilus fossil. @CtCeph. popups.uliege.be/1374-8505/inde…

#CephalopodWeek day 3! Two #nautilus just enjoying some tuna at 250m in Papua New Guinea and this tiny, little #sunfish makes an "annoying" 😀 appearance on the #bruvs! After, it swam back and forth for a couple hours... #savethenautilus

These small (<4cm) #fossil imprints of shark egg capsules are 320 (!) million years old. They were found in (now closed) coal mines in Belgium 🇧🇪. By studying them our researchers identified more than 10 different species link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Just back from an incredibly inspiring #iscp11 week @NHM_London. Next to a talk on digitizing cephalopods, I also presented two posters, on Lompret Quarry cephalopods, and on nautilid diet. Hope to see you all again soon! #naturalsciencesbrussels #DiSSCoFed @RBINSmuseum @CtCeph

Our first thought was that this was a Magnapinna (Bigfin squid). However, looking at the still imagery it appears much more like a Mastigoteuthidae, also known as Whip-Lash squid. Any experts what to weigh in? Seen during #EdgeGBR expedition.

Ah ~ Thank you for both translating AND answering @jdwittts! Yes, one of the reasons this sighting is exciting is seeing the creature swim - its position is indeed "upside-down" from what was expected!

Thanks @Prehistorica_CM for the fantastic artwork!!

Meet Ericixerxes potii, a new Devonian euthycarcinoid (extinct, elusive relatives of myriapods like centipedes and millipedes) named after a hedgehog. This arthropod could breathe in the water and on land! Paper is open access below -> royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…
